Repair or Replace Windshield Checker

Use this free checker to see whether your windshield damage looks more like a repair candidate, a replacement case, or something that needs an in-person assessment.

Important: This tool is based on current ROLAGS repair criteria and common screening factors, but it cannot inspect the glass, confirm hidden layer damage, or replace a technician’s judgment.

1. What type of damage best matches what you see?
2. Approximately how large is the damage?
3. Does the damage appear to penetrate both the outside and inside glass layers?
4. Is the damage on the inside layer of the windshield?
5. Are there three or more long cracks coming from the same impact point?
6. Is there visible dirt, moisture, or contamination inside the damage that cannot be cleaned out?
7. Does the crack intersect more than one windshield edge?
8. Is the damage in the driver’s primary viewing area?
9. Is there another existing repair within about 4 inches of this damage in the driver’s primary viewing area?
10. Is the damage next to or within a camera, HUD, rain sensor, heating element, antenna, or other special windshield feature?
Please answer all required questions and enter the damage size or select “I don’t know the size.”

What to do next

Screening result only: A technician should inspect the damage from inside and outside the windshield before confirming repairability.

What the Current ROLAGS Standard Says

The ANSI/AGSC/NWRD ROLAGS 002-2022 standard gives repairable dimensions for common damage types: bullseye up to 1 inch, combination break body up to 2 inches, crack up to 14 inches, half moon up to 1 inch, and star break up to 3 inches. Size is only one factor; location and condition can still make replacement the recommended option.

    When Replacement Is More Likely

ROLAGS lists several conditions where repair is not recommended, including damage through both glass layers, inside-layer damage, three or more long cracks from one impact point, contamination that cannot be removed, damage to the plastic interlayer, certain edge cracks, stress cracks, and damage that could interfere with vehicle operation.

    Driver’s Primary Viewing Area

The standard defines the driver’s primary viewing area as a 12-inch-wide area centered on the driver and extending through the wiper sweep. Repair limits are stricter in this area, which is why the checker treats driver-view damage more cautiously.

    Special Windshield Features

Damage near cameras, HUD systems, rain sensors, coatings, antennas, or other value-added features may require manufacturer-specific guidance before repair. If your vehicle has windshield-mounted ADAS equipment, also use the ADAS Calibration Checker.
